Send mail with Resend or SMTP

A Resend API key or the SMTP server you already have, the sender address, and the domain apps send from.

Why mail matters

In the portal: Setup wizard, the mail step, or Admin, Settings, Email

cyantula mails invites, approvals and alerts, and apps can ask it to send mail for them. Without a mail setting every mail is written to the log instead of sent: fine for a trial, not for the day an owner has to approve something. Pick Resend or SMTP.

Resend

  1. Create an account at resend.com.
  2. Under Domains, add the domain you will send from and add the DNS records Resend shows. Wait until it says Verified.
  3. Under API Keys, create a key with sending access (re_…) and paste it in Resend API key.

SMTP: a mail server you already have

Fill in the server, the port and, usually, a user name and password. Port 587 (STARTTLS) is the common one; 465 is TLS from the start. Port 25 is usually blocked for outgoing mail. Leave encryption on Automatic.

  • Microsoft 365: smtp.office365.com, port 587, a mailbox with authenticated SMTP turned on. With two-step sign-in, use an app password.
  • Google Workspace: smtp.gmail.com, port 587, with an app password of the sending account. Or the Workspace SMTP relay, which needs no login from an allowed IP address.
  • A relay on your own network that trusts the server by its address: leave user name and password empty.

Who mail comes from

The platform sends as: a sender your mail service allows, for example Acme apps <no-reply@example.com>. In Resend, an address on a verified domain; with SMTP, an address the account owns.

Domain published apps may send from: apps choose the part before the @ (reports@…), never the domain. Leave it empty and apps cannot send mail. The daily limit per app is under Published apps.

After saving, use the test on the same page to send yourself a mail.
